It is a type of artificial reproductive technology, applied and followed in cases of infertility to increase the chances of pregnancy. Although surrogate program is the constantly discussed topic, it is considered as the life giving act. It is banned and is considered as illegal in many European and Asian countries but in India it is a legal act.

What is Surrogacy?

A women without a functional uterus can have her genetic offspring with this method, where the embryos are transferred to the uterus of another women who is willing to carry the fetus on the behalf of the infertile couple. The women who carries the pregnancy is called as “surrogate mother”. It is usually done on the terms of agreement for monitory reasons and the surrogate mother will be anonymous.

Conditions to Adopt Surrogate Mother

Not all the cases needs surrogacy, it completely depends on the female infertility causes such as;

  • Total developmental uterine anomalies like septate uterus.
  • When pregnancy can create risk to mother’s health.
  • Obstetrics causes like repeated spontaneous miscarriages that cannot be treated.
  • Females with hysterectomy where the uterus is removed due to gynecological causes or due to any accidents.
  • Severe infectious, illness which can get transfused to the child during pregnancy.

Types

There are two types of Surrogacy

  • Commercial Surrogacy - where the surrogate mother receives money for all the arrangement from the IVF treatment to the delivery of the baby.
  • Altruistic Surrogacy - the surrogate mother receives reimbursement only for the medical and delivery expenses.

Procedure

The hospitals or the infertility centres make an arrangement for the healthy surrogate mother. The details of surrogate mother will be kept confidential and both the surrogate mother and the infertile couple are unknown to each other.

The egg and sperms are retrieved from the infertile couples, which is then allowed to fertilize in the in vitro culture media for the period of 16-18 hours for the formation of the healthy embryo. The process is repeated to get the healthy embryo and then the transfer of the fertilized embryo is done into the uterus of the surrogate mother. The synchronization and coordination of the embryo and uterine endometrium is necessary for the successful implantation and successful pregnancy. Medicines are also administered to the surrogate for better implantation. Medical care is continued throughout the pregnancy until the delivery of the baby. Throughout the pregnancy, the surrogates are encouraged and advised to become emotionally detached from the baby before giving birth. If there is any problem with the oocyte or sperm production in couples, then donor egg or donor sperm methods are also used with the consent.
