Hysteroscopic Surgeries

Hysteroscopic surgeries are the most common procedure in the obstetrical OT’s to treat the females suffering from various gynecological problems. In this technique, an instrument called hysteroscope is inserted in to the vagina to see the inner lining of the uterus. It is done by distending the uterine cavity with a specific media to separate the uterine walls for a clear view. It is usually done after the completion of the monthly cycles.

Infertility and Hysteroscopic surgery

Hysteroscopic surgery also plays a vital role in the assessment and management of the causes of infertility in females. It offers vital benefits in the infertility treatments, in two ways

  • In giving the accurate diagnosis in evaluating the cause of infertility be it in any alteration in the endometrium or in the uterine cavity or in infertility with recurrent abortions.
  • It also helps in the management or treatment of any causes like polyps or fibroids or cervical stenosis, which can be corrected through this method increasing the chances of pregnancy through artificial reproductive methods.

Contraindications of Hysteroscopic Surgery

Hysteroscopic surgeries are contraindicated in some of the cases such as

In Pregnancy - A female who is pregnant should not undergo this procedure, as this may lead to abortion.

In Pelvic Infections - Pelvic inflammatory diseases also called as PID which can spread to the inner other organs such as urethra, kidneys worsening the condition of the females by this procedure.

In Cardiopulmonary Diseases - Where the females are sensitive to anesthesia leading to pulmonary edema, gas embolism or fluid overload.

In Cervical Stenosis - where the female is sensitive to cervical touch leading to cervical trauma.


Hysteroscopy is opted for the two reasons

Diagnostic Hysteroscopy - to diagnose the causes or factors of infertility.

Operative hysterectomy - surgeries to correct the causative factors.
